Some people go to rehab to find themselves. Danielle Martino arrives already disappearing.

Leaving South Florida dope sick on a bus and partially blind after shooting a bad bag of heroin, Danielle Martino enters a new chapter of her life in Queens, New York—one that will challenge her understanding of sobriety, identity, intimacy, and survival.

Addictarium (Echoes of the Ward) follows Danielle through the second year of her stay at The Village, a boot-camp-style therapeutic community where recovery is built on structure, discipline, confrontation, and the difficult process of learning how to live without drugs. Within the walls of the program, she encounters the daily struggles of sobriety, the personalities and conflicts of communal living, and the ghosts of the life she has left behind.

But recovery is never the only story.

As Danielle navigates her first experience living in New York City, she encounters a shifting cast of people, places, relapses, memories, and experiences that expand her world beyond the therapeutic community. Between hardship and discovery, she begins to find fragments of herself as an artist and muse—moments of glamour, excitement, and beauty emerging from an otherwise gritty existence.

At the center of the story is her increasingly complicated relationship with her Drug Abuse Counselor, a connection that gradually crosses professional boundaries and becomes intimate and sexual toward the end of her time in the program. What begins within the framework of treatment develops into an emotionally charged entanglement, forcing Danielle to confront the complicated relationship between vulnerability, desire, trust, and power.

Part recovery narrative, part coming-of-age story, and part portrait of an artist finding her way through a fractured world, Addictarium captures the contradictions of Danielle's life: the ward and the city, discipline and relapse, deprivation and glamour, isolation and intimacy.

In the echoes of the ward, Danielle is learning how to survive sobriety—while discovering how much of herself remains beyond addiction.
